Welcome to Inclusion
at Meadow High School
Pathway 2

Inclusion Lead
Inclusion at Meadow High School is split into three parts:-
- Support for Looked After Children and Children With a Social Worker
- Behaviour support for all pupils
- Interventions for all pupils
We have an Inclusion team dedicated to student support and nurture, as we understand having key adults are an important part in children’s social, emotional and academic progress.
Here are the Inclusion Team for Pathway 2.

Support for Looked After Children
and Children with a Social Worker
All Looked After Children have weekly interventions. Interventions are carefully planned trauma-informed sessions that are adapted to suit the needs and abilities of all pupils at Meadow. They are there to provide additional and personalised support for students.
Interventions for LAC take place with Mrs Mitchell and Miss Cox. Interventions work in partnership with the form tutor and utilise all of the amazing facilities we have here at Meadow such as the cooking room, charity shop and hairdressing salon.
Some examples of interventions for Looked After Children include:-
- Additional support to achieve academic success and develop skills including literacy and numeracy.
- Life skills such as cooking, hair washing, budgeting money or travel training.
- Arts and crafts such as Lego building projects.
- Therapy sessions including using Karen Triesman books and activities to promote healthy attachments.
- Mental health support in coping with emotions and developing resilience.
Every year the Inclusion Team runs enrichment and extra-curricular experiences and trips for our Looked After Children. We also network with our parents and carers regularly at our coffee mornings
Behaviour Support for All Pupils
Pupils may need behaviour support from the Inclusion Team. We recognise that having access to a safe space and key adult can help a young person navigate their behaviour and choices. Through our behaviour interventions we aim to ‘close the gap’ for our pupils and their peers by respecting their chronological age, recreating early missed experiences and providing enriching opportunities through our curriculum. This is in line with our school’s vision and aims focusing on Life Beyond Meadow. We want our pupils to be able to maintain healthy friendships, relationships and lifestyles and be as independent as they can. We also want them to take responsibility for their behaviour and choices, learn from mistakes and reintegrate back into school positively after absence.
Our behaviour support is always in line with area of the Personalised Learning Intention Map (PLIM) and Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP.) Support can vary and include targeted interventions and in class support. All of our provision is regularly monitored and reviewed and courses and professional development are sought in areas of trauma, attachment and emotional literacy to ensure our staff are kept up to date with current practice and understand underlying reasons for challenging behaviour.
The behaviour support the Inclusion Team offers is holistic and information is shared with all relevant professionals in the network including the Form Tutor, Assistant Headteacher and other agencies working with the young person such as the Youth Justice Team. Our behaviour support works well alongside our whole school approaches to de-escalation including Zones of Regulation, Team Teach Principles, Low-Arousal SCERTS approaches and The Rights Respecting School.
Interventions at Meadow
Interventions are carefully planned sessions that are adapted to suit the needs and abilities of all pupils at Meadow. All pupils can access intervention if they require it. Across Meadow our Focus is on developing Independent life skills including transferable employment skills.
We are very fortunate to have an experienced and skilled-up Inclusion Team who are able to offer a wide range of bespoke interventions. These include:-
ELSA
ELSA- Emotional Literacy Support Assistants
At Meadow, we are very lucky to have six trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA). ELSA help students with lots of key skills, including processing and understanding emotions, communication, feelings, friendships, social skills and thinking skills.
Our ELSA team will run groups for students throughout the year with different focuses. These groups will work on areas of student’s Personlised Learning Intention Map (PLIM) and outcomes from their Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Some groups that can be run by ELSA include-
- building confidence and self-esteem
- managing feelings and emotions
- coping with transition and change
- developing communication and independence
- building friendships and creating a circle of friends
- coping with worries, anxiety and stress
- personal hygiene and healthy lifestyles.
If you would like to find out more about ELSA please email Leanne Barratt, Inclusion Lead lbarratt@meadowhighschool.org
Seasons For Growth
At Meadow High School we run a loss and bereavement programme called Seasons For Growth Programme with selected pupils. The Seasons For Growth Co-ordinators are Mrs Mitchell and Miss Barham.
What does the Seasons for Growth Programme do?
This programme is an opportunity for young people aged 6-18 years to:
- Learn about the effects of significant change in their lives.
- Examine how changes in family structure because of death, separation or divorce can be accompanied by a sense of loss.
- Understand it is normal to experience a range of emotions because of loss.
- Develop new skills in coping with their feelings and other grief reactions.
- Appreciate and nurture their strengths and gifts.
- Participate in a group with a caring adult and peers.
If you think the Seasons for Growth Programme could help your child, please speak to Mrs Mitchell or Miss Barratt.
You can find out more about Seasons for Growth on www.seasonsforgrowth.co.uk
Counselling
School Counselling Services
We also offer professional on-site counselling and therapy to our students who are facing barriers to their learning including their mental health. Our counselling services are provided by an outside company called Connect-ed. You can find out more about their services here https://ccsconnected.org.uk/
Our counsellor is currently onsite two days per week and runs both one to one and drop- in sessions for students. Students may be referred to the counsellor for several reasons, however it is important to note parental consent is always required for sessions to begin.
If you would like to find out more about the school’s counselling services please email Leanne Barratt, Inclusion Lead lbarratt@meadowhighschool.org
Nurture at Meadow
Nurture is an approach to Inclusion, which is designed to open up learning for students who face challenges for a variety of reasons including their Special Educational Needs, Looked After Child status or experiencing loss and bereavement.
At Meadow, we strive to provide a holistic, nurturing and trauma informed approach when working with all our students.
We provide tailored and personalised nurturing interventions for our pupils based on the six principles of nurture.
- Children's learning is understood developmentally.
- The classroom offers a safe base.
- Nurture is important for the development of self-esteem.
- Language is understood as a vital means of communication.
- All behaviour is communication.
- Transitions are significant in the lives of children.
Examples of nurture interventions include iChoose, skittles group, social skills groups, teeth brushing groups, as well as groups to promote hygiene, friendships and independence.
