Summer Term 2024

Sixth Form Entry Criteria

6th Form Entry Criteria

Meadow High School

Meadow High School is a specialist setting in Hillingdon for students with Moderate Learning Disabilities and associated complexities. All students must have an EHCP. Our positive learning community incorporates students, families, professionals and our dedicated team of experienced staff, who are committed to, and passionate about, the learning and progress of our pupils.

Many students transfer from year 11 to 6th Form and we have students joining us every year from external provisions as well. For students who are already taught at Meadow, there is no need for an application, however, Meadow High School maintains high attendance standards, aiming for full-time, punctual attendance at a minimum of 95%. If you have required attendance intervention previously and this support from the team hasn't enhanced your attendance, it could impact your progression to 6th Form at Meadow High School. This is determined on a case by case basis.

The majority of students typically complete years 12 and 13 before progressing further externally, with only a minority opting to continue into year 14. Those who do stay on for year 14 typically fall into the following categories (see chart overleaf).

Nb: Staff will be advising families from year 11 whether their child is expected to be moving on after year 13 or whether they would be staying on for year 14.

Letter to Year 11 (and new starters in the Sixth Form)

June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer(s),

re: Transition to 6th Form Coffee Morning

We would like to invite parents and carers to a transition coffee morning on Thursday 4th July from 9.30am-10.30am. This will be hosted in the main hall.

The focus of the morning will be talking about provision in 6th Form, including entry criteria and attendance expectations, as well as a general overview of what happens day to day and how this differs from KS3 and KS4. Teachers will not be available on this occasion but you will be able to speak with the Assistant Head Teacher(s) for 6th Form as well as Ms Carter, our Team Leader.

Please see the handbook and entry criteria attached to this letter for more information, which we will be discussing.

Our independent transitions and careers advisor Sue Stock will also be in attendance. Sue works with each student at Meadow to plan future steps and will be able to support families with applications when leaving Meadow.

Please note that car parking is extremely limited due to our new build so we would advise using public transportation where possible.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Many apologies for the late response,

I am pleased to inform you that your child has been selected to participate in the school multi-sports session after school each Wednesday between 26th June and 17th July. The sessions run from 3.15pm to 4.15pm.

If your child is an independent traveler they can leave on their own straight after the session, but should your child require pick up, then you must collect them no later than 4.30pm. There are zero tolerances in negative behavior linking to the school policy. If any child does not follow the session expectations, they will be withdrawn from the session.

If you have any questions or any issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Letter to Year 10 - Phased Transfer (from London Borough of Hillingdon)

Parents/Carers/Young People

June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer/Young Person

PHASE TRANSFER 2024-2025

Our records indicate that you/your young person has an Education, Health and Care Plan who may be looking to start a new setting in September 2025.  I am writing to inform you that the Special Educational Needs and Disability Team have already started carrying out the phase transfer process for your young person.

The Local Authority is required to name a placement for you/your young person by 31 March 2025.  This process would have been explained to you at the most recent Annual Review that would have taken place or is taking place in the very near future.

We are writing to you now to gather young person/parental preferences for September 2025. We will also receive a low number of preferences via the annual review process.

Please find enclosed a preference form for you to complete and send back to us.

We need to know from you

  • Do you want to go to college in September 2025?
  • Do you want to join a training provider in September 2025?
  • Or do you want to leave school and try to get a job?
  • Or do you want to stay at your current school?

If you are planning to go to college or into training in September 2025, which one would you like to go to?

If you are not sure which one just yet, you can let me know that.

The Local Authority will be consulting with the nearest appropriate setting for all students, even if this school/College is not listed. In addition, where independent settings are requested as a preference, the Local Authority has a right to consult with appropriate maintained settings to establish whether a placement is an efficient use of resource.

If you do not have a preference or your young person wishes to remain at their current setting, please still return the form and let us know this.

If you would like support with this process, you can contact SEND Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) on 01895 277001 or sendiass@hillingdon.gov.uk.

Please be aware that pupils with EHC Plans are not automatically entitled to transport to an Education setting.  Some pupils will be eligible for home to school transport and more information about this policy can be found at http://www.hillingdon.gov.uk/article/20108/Home-to-school-transport

If you have any queries, please contact me on the details below.  Otherwise, we look forward to receiving the completed preference form, on the below email address, by Friday 5 July 2024.

Yours sincerely,
Jessica Brodie
SEND Officer

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of our learning Personal development, we are taking part in an eating out experience at Pizza Hut on Thursday 18th July 2024. This experience is to build upon the skills they have learnt in Out in the Community lessons and Themed Learning.

This will also support our work within PSHE looking at developing our social skills.

We will be leaving school at 11:30am and will return to school at 2:30pm in time for normal transport home. We will be travelling by school minibus and first aiders will accompany us.

Your child will not require a packed lunch on this day.

If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact me mparker@meadowhighschool.org.

Yours sincerely,

Mr M Parker

Letter to Year 11 - Trip to Thorpe Park

12th June 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Year 11 Trip to Thorpe Park

As a year group, we are going to visit Thorpe Park on Wednesday, 3rd July 2024. As we approach the end of Year 11, this trip is to recognise the hard work Year 11 has done throughout the year. We also hope it will make some happy memories before they prepare to move on to their next chapter.

As a reward trip, we will not be taking any pupil whose behaviour is likely to put others at risk. Everyone in Year 11 currently has a place, but pupils know their behaviour needs to be appropriate. If we do not feel confident that a pupil will follow instructions and keep themselves (and others safe) whilst off-site, they will not be allowed to go on the trip.

Students will be responsible for handling their own money and will be able to practice their social interaction skills with staff at Thorpe Park and each other.

We will be leaving school at 9.15am by minibus and we will arrive back at school before the end of the school day.  There will be no cost to attend this trip.

If your child would like to buy lunch or snacks while we are out, please send a small amount of money in with them. Students are welcome to bring a packed lunch instead, if they prefer. If they are entitled to a free school lunch, please indicate below and we will make sure they have a packed lunch provided.

Many thanks,

Maxine Newman
Team Leader Years 9-11

Letter to Year 11, 12, 13 and 14 - Prom

Dear Parents/Guardians,

19th  June 2024

Re: Year 11 & 6th Form ERAS PROM – Thursday 11th July 2024

To celebrate the achievements of our Year 11 and 6th Form students, we will be holding our school Prom on Thursday 11th July 2024 between 7:30pm and 10:00pm in the school hall.  Ticket price £10.

The theme this year is Eras, a retro-chic celebration of fashion through time. This reflects the work we have been doing with our students on sustainable fashion and finding your own style – at Meadow High School we believe that celebrating our individuality and expressing who we are is what it’s all about!   Wear what makes you feel amazing!

Prom Shop: Our Prom Shop will be open from Mon. 24th June. Students can bring in an item to swap for something else; if they don’t have anything to swap, come along anyway, we will be happy to help!

Dee’s Salon:  Thanks to the kindness of Ms. Lee and her team, we will be open for appointments.  If your child would like support with hair and/or nails to help them feel fabulous on the night please tick the box on the slip below and we will contact you to arrange a suitable time – first come, first served.

Prom tickets are on sale NOW until Monday 1st July ’24. The ticket price includes a visit to Miss Barratt’s famous mocktail bar, Mr. M. ‘spinning the discs’ as well as a special buffet of Asian-style food, and entertainment from the incredible magician Angus Baskerville, a rising star heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer. Angus will be amazing us with his close up magic skills – I can’t wait!

https://images.api.edinburghfestivalcity.com/F-155/5edc909477c26958f308c543d54777ab-original

There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos on the night. If you do not want your child to be in any photographs with friends please contact your child’s Form Tutor.

We hope very much that all students will attend as the evening is a celebration of their shared experiences at Meadow High School and the journey they have all been on together.

Letter to Whole School - National Book Tokens

Wednesday 12th June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

With the invaluable support from our families, our students and our Governors here at Meadow, we now have our brand new library, which opened its shiny new doors in June 2023. Our library is a warm, welcoming and vibrant space that is the new hub of our school.

The library is always bustling with students, whether it is during a weekly class visit or at break and lunchtimes and we have already had some fantastic events take place in our library, including our Scholastic Book Fair and our Harry Potter Day celebration!

We are now entering our third year of establishing our new library space, and we have been invited to take part in a competition to win extra funding to put towards even more amazing new resources for our students and our library.

National Book Tokens are giving schools across the UK the chance to win £1,000 in National Book Tokens and a year’s free membership to the School Library Association, PLUS one overall winner will also receive £500!

We are asking for your much-needed support to help us continue our development of a fun and welcoming library space for all by nominating Meadow High School for the National Book Tokens prize. All you need to do is visit https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/schools-prize and enter your email address, contact details and "Meadow High School" as your chosen school.

Letter to Whole School - Coffee Morning With Annual Review Lead

21st May 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

My name is Pam Sandhu and I am thrilled to be the Annual Review Lead for your child this year! We have something so special in common, your child.

Whilst my role is not a day-to-day pupil contact, I would like to get to know the pupils, and any aspirations for  their future. My job is to make sure both the school and your Local Authority know their special talents and anything they need to grow their other skills or abilities they might be hiding from us!

You know your child better than anyone else in the world. What I will be involved in will be a little glimpse of who your child really is and what makes them so amazing.

EHCPs are about your child's barriers to progress and how we all have to work together to overcome this. We will work with you to sensitively identify your child's challenges and barriers so that we can work together to overcome them.

It will take me a bit of time to get to know all the pupils and yourselves.  I am planning to hold a coffee morning on Tuesday 11th June at 9.30am to introduce myself and put names to faces.

Thank you so much for trusting me with your child's Annual Reviews. I am looking forward to helping your child to reach for the stars.

Yours sincerely,

Pam Sandhu
Annual Review Lead

Letter to selected pupils -Glee Club Confirmation

Glee Club Confirmation letter

Your child has received a place in our new after school Glee club!

If your child is an independent traveller and you have signed the permission form, they can make their own way home. Pupils who are not currently independent travellers must be picked up by an agreed person at 4.15pm promptly.

The first session will be on Wednesday 15th May 2024. This session will cover the structure and rules expected of our students, the club will be run by Miss Kalia and Mr Ellis.

Glee Club has established rules that students and parents must uphold to allow the safety of students.

Students will have three warnings for any unacceptable behaviour within the club. Each warning will be sent home with your child explaining the nature of the behaviour. On the third and final warning your child, we will sadly have to ask that your child is withdrawn from the club.

If you are running late, please ring the school office to inform us. Parents will also have a warning system for picking their child up late without phoning to tell the school in advance. Should this happen then we will have to withdraw the pupils place at the club. Where pupils are picked up late regularly even with notice the child’s place may have to be withdrawn.

To support the running and resourcing of this club we would like to ask parents and carers to make a voluntary donation of £1 a week to cover our costs. This can be done weekly or paid in a block. If you choose to make the donation in a block and your child is absent the money would be carried over to the next week.  Please pay via ParentPay.

Below are this terms Glee club dates:

Wednesday 15th May

Dear Parents/Carers,

Re:  Harry Potter Day – Celebrating Fantasy Fiction Storytelling

        Thursday 2nd May 2024__________________________________

At Meadow High School we like to find reasons to make life a little more interesting and indulge our love of books. Last year was all things Star Wars and Sci-Fi, this year we are joining in Harry Potter Day and celebrating the fantasy fiction genre.

There are lots of ways to enjoy the week.

  • Thursday 2nd May: come to school dressed as a favourite character from any fantasy fiction story

ALL WEEK Visit our library at lunchtime to

  • explore the books in our librarian’s choice display
  • watch one of our favourite films
  • learn to play some of our new communication games [HP Dobble tournament on Thursday!]
  • enjoy colouring, quizzes and puzzles

Don’t worry if you’re not a Harry Potter fan, there are so many other stories in this genre to enjoy. Whether you are trying to train a dragon, on a quest to destroy the one ring, have travelled through your wardrobe to the enchanted world of Narnia or are caught up in the political game playing in Westeros [Game of Thrones], school will be a place to rest on your journey on the 2nd of May!

World of Work: OR come dressed as a writer, illustrator, film/book reviewer, model maker or CGI artist?  Whatever works for you, we hope you enjoy the day!

Letter to Whole School - Anti Racism Workshop

Tuesday 16th April 2024

Dear Parents/Carers

Last term, we ran a parent workshop with Audrey Pantelis from Elevation Coaching and Consulting Ltd. She is a former Head of a SEND school and has specific insights into how we can successfully become an anti-racist school, from the SEND perspective.

The focus of the last workshop was to discuss the school's work on becoming an anti-racist school. It gave the parents a chance to share their ideas about what positive changes they would like to see within the school and some of the challenges they feel they face within school and within their wider community.

The workshop was a real success and we had some great feedback from the parents who attended.

This term Audrey is coming in again to run a follow up session for parents. All parents are welcome to attend, even if you attended the last session.

The workshop will run on Friday 17th May at 9:30am – 10:30am in our school library. She would love you to come along and have a chat with her!

If you would like to attend, please complete the below reply slip and hand it into reception.

Thank you

Ms Sojka and Ms Newman
Anti-Racism coordinators

Letter to Year 13 and 14 - Transition Coffee Morning

15th April 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

Students Transition Coffee Morning

We hope this letter finds you well. As your child prepares for the significant transition from Meadow School to college, we understand that this period can bring many questions and perhaps a few concerns about the next steps in their educational journey.

To support you and your child during this time, we are pleased to invite you to a special Coffee Morning hosted by our Therapy and Interventions Teams at Meadow School. This event is designed to provide you with valuable insights into the transition support available, and to offer a platform for discussing any specific needs your child might have.

Details of the Coffee Morning:  Tuesday 21st May 2024, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Meadow High School

The morning will include a presentation from our dedicated team members across the therapy and interventions departments, including Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and our Inclusion Team staff. Our careers advisor Sue Stock will also be joining us to add her wealth of knowledge around the transition process and provide support. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for you to engage in individual discussions with the therapists, Sue and the inclusion team. This will be a great chance to ask questions, express any concerns, and discuss specific support measures for your child.

Refreshments will be provided, and we hope to create a relaxed and informative atmosphere for all attendees.

Your involvement and input are incredibly important to us, and we believe that together, we can ensure a smooth and successful transition for your child. If you would like to attend, please fill out the expression of interest form attached to this letter and return to school as soon as possible, but at the latest by Friday 10th May 2024, as this will help us in our planning and preparation.

Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. We look forward to welcoming you to the Coffee Morning and to discussing how we can best support your child's next steps in their educational journey.

Letter to Whole School - Shining Stars Club

17th April 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

Shining Stars Club Wednesday’s 3.15- 4.15

The music and dance department in Meadow High School are excited to introduce an inclusive choir for the Summer term. This fun new choir/dance group has been set up to encourage pupils to develop their singing skills, movement, confidence, teamwork and it gives pupils the opportunities to lead in our school’s annual Performing Arts concerts.

If your child has an interest in either or both activities. The first class will begin Wednesday 8th May.

If you would like your child to take part, please fill in the permission slip below return to Mr Ellis ASAP as spaces are very limited, so it will be a first come first serve basis. Please tick which role(s) your child would prefer; singing or dancing or both.   Pupils will get the opportunity to select songs they wish to perform, and will even learn to compose and rearrange music!

If your child has handed the slip in on time and got a place, you will receive a second confirmation letter with dates attached.

Yours sincerely,
Miss Kalia & Mr Ellis

Letter to Pathway 1 - Henna or Mendhi Permission - For Eid Party

16th April 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of our school’s celebration of Eid, we are organising a special Eid party for our students on Friday, 19th April 2024.

One of the activities planned for the event is the application of Mehndi on the children’s hands.

Mehndi application is a traditional and culturally significant practice during Eid festivities. It’s an opportunity for our students to engage with and celebrate cultural diversity within our school community.

We assure you that the Mehndi paste we will be using is safe and made from natural ingredients. However, we understand that some parents may have concerns about their child participating in this activity, particularly if their child has allergies.

If your child has any known allergies or sensitivities, please indicate so on the slip below. Additionally, if you would like to give permission for your child to have henna applied on their hand during the Eid party, please fill out the slip and return it to the school by Thursday 18th April 2024

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Majidi
