Pathway 1 Ethos and Curriculum Design
At Northwood Road we develop young adults who are able to live as independently as possible, with the skills required to have hobbies, interests and aspirations to be active contributors in their community.
The curriculum design is founded on what the aims are for our young people. This leads to when they leave school and head to college and then into the wider world. Our aim is for all pupils to leave with the life skills needed to progress into adulthood to live meaningful, healthy, purposeful lives. With this aim in mind, our Key Stage Five curriculum is primarily focused on life skills, complemented by various accreditation opportunities. In Key Stage Four, the curriculum integrates the National Curriculum with a strong emphasis on life skills, as well as enrichment opportunities to expose the young people to greater opportunities to better develop themselves. Our Key Stage Three curriculum adheres to the National Curriculum at the appropriate level while emphasising the foundational knowledge and skills required for progression. Additionally, Key Stage Three pupils are afforded opportunities for learning outside the classroom/school, initiating their journey towards greater independence.
The curriculum has been designed to support the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills. Learning is regularly revisited and addressed in an cross curricular style. The curriculum allows pupils working a varying levels to each develop their according to their own needs and requirements. Learning is consistently revisited and reinforced, enabling students to construct mental models that facilitate the application of their knowledge and skills beyond the school environment. Our curriculum also embeds therpatuc input in the form of speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. We are supported on site by a therapy team at a whole class level and individual level.
