Key Stage 5

In Key Stage 5 we prepare our young people to be adults who have the functional and independence skills to live a meaningful, fulfilled, happy life.  Our young people will have hobbies and interests that support this. Pupils will have advanced in their ability to self-advocate and self-regulate. Pupils continue to work on meaningful accreditations to support their transition to college and beyond. 

Teaching is largely based around applying knowledge and being able to generalise skills in various settings and situations.  We have a studio flat set up for use in school, which gives pupils real life experience of the daily tasks needed, such as cleaning, food preparation, using a washing machine and so forth. The curriculum is largely based in the community, where pupils learn to travel safely and have opportunities to experience and explore the facilities in the local area and beyond. Where suitable, pupils undertake accreditations.  We are committed to developing each pupil and giving them the skills needed when they leave Meadow.   Pupils in Key Stage 5 also have the opportunity for Enterprise and where suitable Work Experience.  Work Experience is tailored to an individual's abilities and interests, currently our students are running on-site enterprise projects, some supporting in a care home and some working on an allotment. 

Throughout their time in Sixth Form, pupils and families have access to support and advice from an independent careers advisor. This information will help inform the next transition for pupils when moving on from Meadow High School.

6th form Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities

It is hoped that students in the sixth form will take advantage of opportunities to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities such as (not limited to): 

• Residential trips to Centre Parcs
• Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme: Bronze/Silver/ Gold  
• Enrichment weekly sessions
• After school clubs 
• Sporting events: Boccia, rounders 
• Trips 
• Sixth form leavers afternoon/sixth form prom/sixth form BBQ

 

Duke of Edinburgh Award   (DofE)

Duke of Edinburgh is an international award for 14-24 year-old who can do a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver then Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  

We start on the Bronze level which consists of 4 components, Physical, Skill, Volunteering and Residential. Some of our young people undertake and achieve this in Key Stage 4 if they are an existing Meadow student. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning and training for and completing an expedition. Once complete students will be offered a chance to obtain their silver and subsequently their gold. 

Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an award is not a competition or about being first.  It is all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries. It is hoped through our DofE programme the young people will have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. We also aim for them to gain essential skills and attributes for adult life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive.
