Dear Parents/Carers
I can't believe that we are already in the final term of this school year. Spring flowers have sprouted up around the school ground adding a much welcomed burst of colour. I hope everyone has had a great Easter break and that not too much chocolate has been consumed. I know my diet needs to start again!
This close to the start of the term there is not much to report to you about, so I will just highlight a few upcoming important dates over the next few weeks. Firstly, and sadly, the teachers pay and school funding dispute has not yet been settled and further strike dates have been announced. There is still time for these to be called off, but I wanted to make sure that we are giving you the maximum amount of time to plan round these. The announced dates are Thursday 27th of April and Tuesday 2nd of May. Arrangement for these dates will most likely be very similar to other strike days that have already occurred.
The School is also closed on Monday the 8th of May for the King's Coronation Bank Holiday.
I am sure, as a school, we will find some way to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles. Our new Events coordinator, our librarian Ms Gaafar, will be sending out details of this shortly and sharing photos of events with you afterwards.
Just before the end of term several of our staff visited BETT, an educational exhibition, where exhibitors share ideas and services with schools, mainly with an ICT focus. Some of our staff went with a focus of looking to develop our ICT curriculum to include more coding skills. Coding is all about how we communicate with computers, so we can get them move things such as robots or create animations etc. This will, in the future, help support pupils to learn transferable skills needed in many workplaces.
Kind Regards
Ms C Caddell
Deputy Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers,
We are very lucky to announce we have a new in-house school counselling service beginning next Tuesday. Our counselling services will be provided by an outside organisation Connect-Ed who have 35 years’ experience providing holistic counselling and therapy in schools. Our counsellor Holli Pendleton is an experienced Psychotherapist and has previously worked in both SEN and
mainstream settings.
Students will receive a Drop-In Consent Form so please sign and return this stating your preferences. No child will receive counselling without parental permission. It is also important to note referrals can only be made via the school and may be for a variety of reasons which will be discussed with parents first.
If you have any questions about the counselling service or would like some more information, do not hesitate to email me lbarratt@meadowhighschool.org
Alternatively more information is available on Connect-Ed’s website https://ccsconnected.org.uk/

Success Story
This week a group of residents from the Burroughs Care Home visited Meadow.
Our students go to the care home on a weekly basis during Vocational Pathways and complete various tasks to assist the residents.
Miss Wilson and Mrs Mandalia organised with the Care home for the residents to come to us and have their hair and nails done and the students would make them a cream tea. Students had a day of planning the activities and the menu so that it could be agreed by the care home.
Ms Lennon and Ms Lee gave the residents a ‘pamper session’ including wash and blow dry and nail painting.
We were also delighted to see that one of the carers that came with the group was an ex-student, Rhianna. Rhianna left us to go to Project Search and then got a job at the Burroughs. That was 6 years ago and she is still there!!!!!!!

Trip to Suntory Ltd in Stockley Park
Some of the Sixth form students attended a Work Experience day to Suntory Ltd in Stockley Park on 24 April 2023. Students were welcomed by the site HR Manager and they attended a small presentation about the company, variety of products, new adverts and how they distribute the Lucozade and Rubicon products. Students enjoyed the tour of the site and were amazed to see their socialising room with beautiful decoration and lots of games to promote mental health. After that, our students had an excellent opportunity to carry out an experiment in the lab with the qualified scientists. Students were able to dress up in PPE and were shown how drinks are stored at different temperatures, what equipments and ingredients are used to make drinks and how testing is carried out on complete products for quality purposes. During the Work Experience, students prepared their own drinks, using different flavours, under the close supervision of qualified scientists. Students had a great learning experience and enjoyed a FREE DRINK!!!!

Measles
The local Public Health team has informed us that there has been a recent increase in the number of cases of Measles in Hillingdon. The cases all children aged 1 to 16, and all are unvaccinated.
The current MMR vaccination uptake in Hillingdon is less than 75%, which means that 1 in every 4 children in the borough has not had the two doses of MMR vaccination that provides safe, effective protection against measles. There is variation in uptake across areas of the borough, which means that is some areas a greater number of children have not been vaccinated. This increases the risk of measles transmission in schools.
Measles is a highly infectious respiratory virus that transmits through respiratory droplets from an infected person when they cough and sneeze which is then inhaled by another person. If that person is not fully vaccinated the risk of getting measles is high.
- The signs and symptoms of measles to be aware of are:
- Cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough
- Sore red eyes that may be sensitive to light
- A high temperature (fever), which may reach around 40°C
- Small greyish-white spots on the inside of the cheeks
- A few days later, a red-brown blotchy rash will appear, usually starting on the head or upper neck, before spreading outwards to the rest of the body.
It is important that if a child is suspected of having measles, they do not attend school. They must telephone their GP or NHS 111. Measles is a notifiable disease which means all cases must be followed up, and contacts identified and given advice on what action they need to take.
Please share this information with parents and carers. It is important that parents and carers know whether their child has had two MMR vaccinations, and direct them for more information either to their GP or an NHS information website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/measles/
