Meadow High School Hello
Youtube Channel
– Lots of Stories to enjoy!
Extended Learning: Half term is a really a important time to relax and get ready for the busy final part of the year so no pressure... However, if you get a moment, please remember our youtube channel where you’ll find a wide of stories to enjoy. Listening to stories can help boost reading and language skills;
- spark your imagination and stimulate curiosity
- help your brain, social skills and communication skills develop
- help learn new words as you read. Subconsciously, you will absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively
- help with develop understanding of how to read, modelling pacing, proper intonation (using voice for expression) and correct pronunciation whilst immersing children in stories
- help develop comprehension skills – a crucial part of reading
- help inspire a love of books and reading – a life-long learning tool
We will be posting two new stories on Thursday 1st June. The stories this month are:
|
|
August and His Smile
by Catherine Rayner
read by Miss Willis
& signed by Miss Bonnar
Augustus the tiger is sad. He has lost his smile. So he does a HUGE tigery stretch and sets off to find it and the adventure begins! [A good chance to practise your signing skills!]
|
The Hunger Games Mockingjay
by Suzanne Collins
read by Miss McGee.
[This is a young adult book.]
She has chosen an intriguing chapter from the final book in this story. This writer is a master at descriptive writing – if you want to build your skills have a listen to see how it’s done!

MHS Library Refurbishment Update:
We’re SO nearly there!
Thanks to the support of our amazing school governors, we are in the position to say that our new library is ready to go!
The library will be closed for a final time from Monday 5th June to Monday 26th June 2023. This is so the carpet crew and then library fitters can do their magic! This project will also provide storage in the corridor, freeing up library space for our students whilst ensuring staff can access the resources they need easily.
WE NEED YOUR HELP: We obviously want to reopen the library as soon as possible. If you could offer some time to help restock the shelves on Wednesday 21st June 2023 [morning or afternoon], please contact Miss Gaafar on agaafar@meadowhighschool.org, she will be delighted to hear from you!
Staff have restocked their class reading books to ensure our students have suitable reading materials to keep us going, we need to ask for your patience one last time – because this is what we will gain in return! We have planned the space to maximise accessibility, all the seating is moveable and shelving is at a range of heights. In addition, the story wall will provide a space to sit and think and the bigger library space is separated into smaller areas with seating to create quieter moments in what can be a busy school. The study zone is an area we are excited to develop further and of course more shelves = more books. Our Reading Champions will be helping us make sure our students are involved in this so we get it right!

PROM 2023:
As we are involved in packing up ready for the start of our next exciting new build, we are doing things a little differently this year. Please don’t worry, it will still be fun and totally fabulous – our students deserve no less! We will post more information after the half-term break however we would be grateful for your help if you get a minute over half-term.
We need lots of brightly coloured material for an idea we’re developing. If you have any clothes, duvet covers, sheets, scarfs – any lightweight material you are getting rid of, please send our way.
Mrs Sugden & Mrs Tudor
[on behalf of the Prom Team]

They were able to ask and answer lots of questions about World War 2. They saw the operations room and some original artefacts. They tried on uniforms whilst looking around the museum and listened to a true story about Flight Lieutenant James Nicholson, who had received the Victoria cross for his efforts during the war.

Pathway 1 Visit to Aldenham Country Park
A group of pupils from Pathway 1, Key stage 4/5, enjoyed visiting Aldenham Country park in Hertfordshire this week.
Pupils enjoyed feeding the sheep. We saw baby goats, piglets, cows, rabbits, guinea pigs and more. The alpacas were pleased to see us and came over to say “hello.” The weather was lovely and we enjoyed a picnic close to the 100 acre wood!
Himesh thought the peacock was; “absolutely amazing when he showed off his feathers!”

Pathway 1 - Sixth Form - Afternoon Tea
This week, our friends at Langley Haven Care Home came to visit Meadow High School for an Afternoon Tea. They were hosted by our Pathway 1 Sixth Form classes MP and IM. Pupils put lots of effort into preparing for the Afternoon Tea and made a variety of sandwiches, cakes, scones and drinks. A menu was also made on the computer by our pupils. Classes MP and IM were very brave and all worked together to serve food and drinks, using their communication skills to interact with the residents. Throughout the afternoon, Mr Whittle provided a relaxing and enjoyable ambience with his excellent piano playing skills. He really brought The Ritz to Meadow High School! The afternoon was finished off by an amazing rendition of 'Daisy Daisy' with our pupils singing and signing.
A wonderful time was had by all, and we look forward to inviting them in again soon.

Year 14’s enjoyed a lovely day at Thorpe Park on Wednesday which they had planned themselves as part of moving on. MRS BULLEN (MEADOW TA) IS RAISING FUNDS AND AWARENESS FOR CALM
(Campaign Against Living Miserably)
125 lives are lost every week to suicide
and 75% of all UK suicides are male
CALM currently spends 80% of its expenditure on delivering mental health services which are answering calls and webchats on their helpline; working with communities across the country; and campaigning for better awareness and understanding of suicide and its devastating impact it has on families and loved ones.
I have decided to do a 25km charity walk on Saturday 24th June 2023 to raise money for CALM in respect of my brother who we sadly lost and for everyone that is suffering with mental health issues and needs support.
Thank you for reading my story and I appreciate anything that you can give to ensure this charity can continue to provide the mental health services that are desperately needed in these stressful times.
