Dear Families
In this week's assembly we explored the issue of worries and stress. The impact of modern life has been attributed to the cause of stress in many young people. Unrealistic expectations formed from the media, relentless social media and the ease of accessing disturbing / inappropriate material puts all young people at risk of harm and increasing their stress and worries.
We looked at emotions and discussed that they aren't good or bad, they are simply part of a normal range of human responses.
We then took some time for pupils to share ideas about what might worry children and young people.
Finally, we looked at strategies for coping with stress and worries. These included having a trusted adult to talk to, exercise or taking part in preferred activities like arts, crafts and reading.
We also shared details of places and people that pupils could call should they have a worry.
We have put this and other helpful information around the school to support pupils in accessing support.
Very best wishes to you all for a lovely weekend.

Next Week Is
Diversity & Inclusion Week In School
On Friday 23rd June, our Skittles club will be hosting an extra special Inclusion and Diversity Day, and we would love you to join us in our celebrations!
Skittles club is a group of students and staff at Meadow who work together to promote equality for all people in our school. We want to show that Meadow High School supports and accepts everyone. Our Inclusion and Diversity Day is an opportunity for our school community to come together and celebrate the rich and diverse backgrounds we all have!
On the day, there will be games and activities to take part in, and Skittles club will lead a parade around the school. Skittles club will also have a table selling handmade gifts and goodies to fundraise for the charity Diversity Role Models. Refreshments will be available to purchase on the day.
There will be representatives from the following organisations joining us on the day:
- The Greater London Authority
- The London Borough of Hillingdon’s Families Information Service
- Hillingdon Parent Carers Forum
- Diversity Role Models
- Volunteering Matters
- Rocket Science
We will also be joined by Metropolitan Police officers who will be bringing some of their police horses for our students to meet!
If you would like to join us on Friday 23rd June, please arrive at school at 1.45pm where a member of staff will greet you at reception. Please note that there will be no on-site parking on the day.
If you would like any further information, please contact our Librarian and Events Coordinator, Miss Gaafar, at sgaafar@meadowhighschool.org.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Carers and Parents - Lots to Get Involved With!
The final half-term is always packed with activities and this one is no different. If you have the time there's lots for carers and parents to get involved with at Meadow.
We have Diversity Week next week with help welcome for Tuesday's relaxation and mindfulness session, a chance to share your culture on a stand on Friday and any spare (but not best!) clothes you have which highlight your culture welcome. Miss Kepinska (ckepinska@meadowhighschool.org ) is the contact for any of those activities.
The following Monday, 26th June at 09.50am, in school we have the Friends of Meadow AGM. It's the review of the year for our parent, carer and teacher association and a chance to put forward ideas for the next school year. Please let reception know if you are planning on coming, so we have an idea of numbers, 01895 443310.
Finally, there's Classlist. This is our online community for carers and parents to chat, exchange tips and ideas. Just in the past week we've had free tickets for Anna Kennedy's Raising Autism Awareness event at Brunel University and a free KFC giveaway, so join up if it's knowledge or chicken you're after. Or both. You can sign-up at classlist.com and then click on "Find your school" to get started. If you're reading this online, this link should get you straight in: https://classlist.page.link/nwLGZ7wv8YzE7QiXA

Ducklings Come to Meadow
This year in L5 we thought we would try something different. Instead of our
usual chick hatching experience, we thought we would hatch ducklings! On
Monday 5 June our eggs arrived. We had nine eggs to start and five of them
hatched. Their breed is Khaki Campbell, so they are not yellow like you would
usually expect instead they are olive green. They have been enjoying seeing
the classes so far and are very sociable. They especially love swimming in their
paddling pool. Look out for more pictures on the school Twitter!

Sixth Form Sponsored Charity Walk
in support of Steel Bones
This week the students and staff took part in our 3K Charity walk for Steel Bones.
28 students and 11 staff enjoyed a stroll in the hot sunshine to raise funds for a cause close to our hearts.
So far the students and staff raised almost £500 for the Charity. We would like to thank all involved for your support and generosity.
The students were over the moon to be greeted at the finish line by our surprise visitor Ms Taylor and her new baby. We all enjoyed seeing Ms Taylor and her new beautiful baby girl.
We are still taking sponsorship, so if you would like to donate please let the school reception know.
Thank you.
Ms Carter & All of 6th from Meadow High School.

Year 8 Trip to Whipsnade Zoo
The pupils in Year 8 had a fantastic time on their trip to Whipsnade Zoo. The Year 8’s went on this trip to consolidate their understanding of the previously covered topic, ‘Frozen Desserts and Landscapes’ for Geography. They were able to see many different animals based around different continents of the world. They enjoyed driving through and walking past many animals and had meaningful discussions about animal appearances and habitats.

Pathway 1
Residential Trip to Centre Parcs
On Monday 22 May, twenty eager and excited Pathway 1 students headed to Woburn Forest Center Parcs in Bedfordshire for a 5 day / 4 night residential trip.
The trip consisted of life skills, social skills and lots of fun and adventure and was a great opportunity for our learners to put into practice all the skills we have been building in school. From forest walks, owl and falcon flying, pottery painting, zip lining, rock wall climbing, swimming to fencing everybody was able to try something new, and we all returned safe, happy and a little tired. For some of our young people this is the first or second time ever they have been away from home. We look forward to building and developing our young people's skills and developing the challenge in subsequent years. The group of students behaved impeccably and were a credit to Meadow High School, we look forward to planning another experience soon.

Assistant Head, Pathway 1

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came and supported our pupils during Meadow High School's Sports Week! - I would also like to give a special thank you to all the staff and pupils who helped out and participated during the week.
Team work, resilience, motivation and sportsmanship was all proudly shown by each key stage and every player representing their team to a high standard. This made a very close contest to find the overall winner, with the winning team winning by JUST 5 points.
Congratulations to:
4th place - Yellow
3rd place - Green
2nd place - Red
1st place - Blue - also winning a day of none-school uniform this week.
We hope to continue this spirit and success into next year!
Thank you again,

Accident & Emergency Pressure
Coping With Hot Weather
Tips for coping with Asthma
Health issues related to the current warm weather are causing our A&Es to be busier than usual, with waits of up to 11 hours in A&Es at the moment.
A&E is for life-threatening emergencies. There are lots of NHS services that can help you. Knowing where to go, and when, will help you get the right care when you need it.
Your local high street pharmacy can provide advice and over the counter medication to help with hayfever. You can also contact your GP surgery or call 111 when your GP is closed.
In this warm weather, when we also have a very high pollen count at the moment, make sure you follow our top tips to prevent yourself becoming unwell.
Tips for coping in hot weather
- Keep out of the heat if you can.
- If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.
- Cool yourself down. Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.
- Keep your living space cool. Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down.
Tips if hot weather sets off your asthma
- Keep taking your regular preventer inhaler so you’re less likely to get symptoms. And carry your reliever inhaler with you at all times so you’re ready if symptoms do come on.
- Go for regular asthma reviews to check you’re on the right meds for you, and you’re taking your inhalers in the best way to get the benefits through the summer months.
- Use your written asthma action plan so you know what to do if hot weather triggers symptoms.
- If you’re using your reliever inhaler three or more times a week, or you’ve noticed the hot weather’s made your symptoms worse, book an extra catch-up with your doctor or asthma nurse.
- Keep inhalers in a cool place out of direct sunlight so they continue to work well. Try keeping your reliever in a cool bag when you’re out and about on a hot day. Don't add any ice to the bag though, because your inhaler needs to be kept dry.
- Keep an eye on pollen forecasts and find out more about why staying on top of your hay fever symptoms with antihistamines is good for your asthma too.
- Plan any outdoor activities for earlier in the day when the air quality tends to be better, including exercise.
Tips if you have hayfever
- Your local high street pharmacy can help with advice and over the counter medicine around hayfever.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting into your eyes
- Shower and change your clothes after you have been outside to wash pollen off
- Stay indoors whenever possible and keep windows and doors shut as much as possible
- Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
- do not cut grass or walk on grass or keep fresh flowers in the house
- do not smoke or be around smoke – it makes your symptoms worse
- do not dry clothes outside – they can catch pollen
