- Should you have concerns about the safety of a child over the summer please use this email or phone number to contact the Hillingdon Stronger Families Team: strongerfamilieshub@hillingdon.gov.uk or call 01895 556006
- Pupils, if you have concerns over the summer you can contact:
|
|
|
- Should you need support with food over the summer please contact the London Borough of Hillingdon at 0203 949 5786 or Help Through Hardship 08082 082138.
- Should you have concerns regarding Domestic Abuse please contact the HIllingdon Domestic Abuse Advocacy Service (HDAAS) in confidence (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) by emailing hdaas@hillingdon.gov.uk or calling 07874 620954 Outside of HDAAS' opening hours and on bank holidays, contact our Stronger Families Hub by calling 01895 556006 or emailing strongerfamilieshub@hillingdon.gov.uk
- If you are a victim of domestic violence and abuse, you can make a safety plan to help you live safely and be safe if you stay - we can help you to do this. In an emergency, call the police on 999. If you are calling 999 from a mobile telephone and are unable to speak, remain silent and follow the operator's instructions. When prompted, press 55 as part of the silent solution option (this option does not apply to 999 calls made from a?landline telephone).
As I said above, I hope you have a stress and problem free summer and don't need any of these contact details.
We look forward to seeing you all smartly dressed in your correct school uniform / 6th form dress code on Wednesday 6th September at 9am.
Very best wishes

KEEPING PUPILS SAFE ONLINE
OMEGLE - TALK TO STRANGERS
- IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS -
Dear Families
We would like to make you aware of an app called Omegle also known as Talk to Strangers. Some of you may have heard of it, some of you may not.
Launched in March 2009, Omegle has recently become popular again. This ‘virtual chat room’ offers random users unmoderated or moderated chats with one another from anywhere in the world. It pairs random users identified as ‘You’ and ‘Stranger’ to chat online via ‘Text’, ‘Video’ or both.
Chats are anonymous unless the user states who they are. It’s free and no account sign up is required.
There are many imitation apps such as ‘Chat for Omegle’, ‘Free Omegle Chat’ and ‘Omeglers’, but there is no longer an official Omegle app. All sites and apps appear to share the same features and purpose, but only some are linked to Omegle. As such, parents and carers should check to see which apps kids have got installed on their phones and the risks presented with each.
It is extremely popular among children and young people because a lot of social media influencers use and post about it.
It also does not require registration or have age verification, which makes young people a potential target for abuse online. Its site states “predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful.”
Children and young people may be asked by strangers to share their name, age and location. So, it’s also important to talk to your child about sharing personal information online with strangers.
There is a risk of users unexpectedly coming across pornography and other types of inappropriate content.
Although there are prompts to encourage the safe use of the platform, Omegle does not have any parental controls.
There are no instructions on how a user can report other users or content. There is also no block or mute feature either nor is there a robust enough system of monitoring or filtering video/text chats, so it’s important to enable parental controls on their phone and/or your home broadband.
In addition to the potential online risks, parents should also be aware of the danger of these conversations moving from Omegle to other platforms, or from online to offline, and potential meetups.
It’s important to understand that Omegle connects kids with strangers of any age, so we would advise parents to consider restricting the use of the platform for children under 18.

Retirement Farewell
We said a very fond farewell to Mrs Wallington this week as she embarks on her retirement.
Mrs Wallington's son started at Meadow in 2005, and then she joined us as a staff member in 2008. Initially working as a Teaching Assistant, Mrs Wallington then moved across to our Welfare Team, which is where I know many of you will know her. Mrs Wallington has been unfailingly kind, cheerful and supportive to pupils, families and colleagues, and she will be very missed by all of us. I'm sure you will join me in wishing Mrs Wallington the very best for her well deserved retirement.

Royal Lane Site and Northwood Road Site Update
Please see below a new timeline for our school building projects. This is to the best of our current information and is of course, subject to change!
You will also see some artists' impressions of the replacement block being built at Royal Lane. The work for this starts next week and we should be moving into this beautiful building in January 2025.
There have been some significant issues regarding the Northwood Road development that have resulted in us going all the way back to the drawing board for a completely new design. We hope to have images of this to share with you in the Autumn term. As you will have seen from the timeline, this has further delayed the expected date when we will occupy the new site.

Year 7 - Magician
A magician named Andy Boughtflower came in yesterday for all of Year 7, performing a routine all about healthy eating. He put on a spectacular show for us, making water appear and disappear, bringing life to a toy fox and found money in lots of people's ears!!!

Year 7 Trip To The Science Museum
On the 4th of July, all of year 7 students went to the Science Museum. The trip's aim was to provide pupils with the opportunity to explore the wider community and develop their social skills.
We had plenty of fun, got to know the space explorers, had a look at the Moon, and glanced inside a human's body.
We will definitely be going back!

Interventions Trips
Last week we took some of our Looked After Children and Interventions students out to Bowling and McDonalds and Chessington World of Adventures. We had two great days, one a bit wetter than the other! There were lots of rides, laughter, fun and friendships. The students were a joy to take out and an asset to the school. We are very proud of your achievements this year everyone!

Class JR Trip to Windsor
On Wednesday 19th July Class JR spent the day in Windsor. We spent the day practising the social skills and road safety skills we have been working on in our Out in the Community lessons. We fed the swans and enjoyed a boat trip along the River Thames, took a stroll in the park followed by a picnic in the bandstand, saw the sights from a tour bus and even enjoyed an ice cream before heading back to school.
Here's what the students had to say:
“It’s so awesome” Ahmed
“I fed the ducks” Lucas
“Wow!” Amid (when he saw the castle)
"I love trips" Kayden

Year 10 Food Technology - Tea Parties
As part of their Unit Award, our Year 10 Food Technology options groups this week hosted a tea party for staff to attend, have a sit down and enjoy some delicious food. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to put their
catering skills that they have been learning about into practice by serving food that they had made and interacting with staff on a social level.
Many thanks to all staff that came and making the event possible!
The students really enjoyed the experience, and it was especially rewarding seeing them demonstrate great enthusiasm and hospitality.

8HA Trip to Warner Bros Studios
8HA have really enjoyed their trip to The Warner Bros Studios this week. This was in line with what they were learning over the term, in their English lessons about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Pupils were able to make connections and links to what they read about and were able to recognise characters and settings. They all enjoyed the experience and it was a great way to consolidate their learning.

Consultation
Hillingdon Family Hub and Early Years Nurseries
Hillingdon Council is inviting children, young people, families, carers, partners, providers and community organisations to have their say on its proposals to roll out a family hub model boroughwide and options for its early years nurseries.
Family hubs are one-stop-shops where all families can access important services. Hubs deliver these services from conception, through a child's early years, and until they reach the age of 19 (or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities). Family hubs act as a single 'front door', making it easier for families to get the help they need, and to improve the support on offer.
The family hub model in Hillingdon would build upon existing services that are in place to support families in the early years, by evolving the children's centre offer to support older children and young people, while working with partners more closely to increase the range of support and services available.
Residents are also being asked to share their views on proposals regarding the future of the council's directly provided childcare in three early years nurseries, located in Hayes, Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
Have your say by completing our online form Family hub and early years nurseries consultation - Hillingdon Council before Sunday 30th July.

Information on how to secure free school meals vouchers for eligible disabled children
For most families, arrival of the summer holidays heralds a well-earned break. But our latest holiday club survey tells an altogether different story with 78% of parents of disabled children reporting feeling stressed and anxious due to a lack of summer holiday clubs for their child.
How to ask your child’s school for accessible free school meal alternatives
Is your child missing out on their free school meals entitlement due to a dietary requirement, medical illness, or sensory need?
If they are on the school roll of a state or academy school, you can download template letters from the Contact website and use them to ask your child’s school or college to make alternative arrangements such as a supermarket voucher.
Parents are already reporting success in getting schools to provide free school meal reasonable adjustments such as a voucher using our letters.
To download the templates, visit the ‘If you are missing out on school meals’ section on our Free School Meals campaign page.

FREE WEBINAR: Resilience and Wellbeing for Carers
Monday 11th September at 6.30pm – 7.15pm
We believe that understanding how our brain works, and how it responds to stress, is the first step to supporting carers to cope better, build their resilience and boost their wellbeing.
In this webinar, hosted by Kerry Seymour from Inspired to Change, we’ll take you on a whistle stop tour of the brain, explaining why the brain responds the way it does to the day to day stressors and challenges that come with being a carer.
We will also talk through some simple tools and solutions to help you to encourage your brain to respond in a more helpful way to these challenges - helping you to take back control, prioritise your wellbeing and help you to be the carer that you want to be!
