Dear Families
Since the last bulletin we have had three confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the school community. We have followed the advice from Public Health England in regard to staff and pupils.
To date, this makes 10 confirmed cases in the community and we have learned the following from dealing with these:
- Where individuals have isolated as soon as any member of their household has any symptoms we have not had to isolate any others within the school as there has been no risk of exposure.
- Our internal measures are proving effective as stopping the spread of the virus within the school.
- Out cautious approach to sending groups and individuals home to isolate is effective.
As you know, the pupils' last day of term is now Thursday 17th December at 3.05pm.
We will continue to support Track and Trace and would ask that you email jrigby@meadowhighschool.org or text 07851 254 246 if your child tests positive for COVID-19 up until Wednesday 23rd December.
Please include:
-
your child’s name
-
the date when symptoms first appeared
-
the date of the confirmed COVID-19 test result
-
their last day in school.
We will inform other parents by email if their child has been a ‘close contact’ and is required to self-isolate.
For clarity, if your child tests positive for COVID-19, having developed symptoms more than 48 hours since being in school, the school should not be contacted in this case. Please follow contact tracing instructions provided by NHS Test and Trace.
Build
If you haven't already, please take a moment to log onto our Eye in the Sky portal to see the progress of the new building.
Go to: www.siteeyeportal.co.uk
Username: galliford_meadow
Password: 1Maag9yA
We can see the frame of the building taking shape and there is a set of stairs in place. Now you can definitely get a feel for how big the building will be. Although we aren't getting any additional classrooms the corridors are wider, most classrooms have a small breakout room attached, there are additional therapy and office spaces and our admin team will no longer be based in a garden shed!
I would like to thank the build team for being so considerate and understanding of the needs of our pupils and I would also like to praise our pupils who have been tremendous in adapting to the sights and sounds of the building work and the disruption this has caused to the school site.
Cycle safety
Sadly, one of our pupils was knocked from their bike last week, resulting in head injuries which, thankfully, did not prove too major. I would like to point out that our pupil was not at fault in this incident.
As you know, the highways of Hillingdon are very busy places and, as a cyclist myself, I am aware that we are riding very flimsy vehicles which are no match for motor vehicles. There are, however, some measures you can take to make cycling or scooting to school safer:
-
Make sure your bike / scooter is in good repair
-
Make sure your brakes are working
-
Always wear a helmet
-
Always wear high visibility clothing
-
Always have lights with you
-
Always follow the law and Highway Code
-
Do not take risks
-
Even if you are 'in the right' do not put yourself in danger to prove a point
Please be safe!
Governors
We are still looking to recruit two parent / carer Governors and we will be seeking nominations in the new year. All are welcome. Please be assured we would train and support you and would seek to utilise your skills and knowledge in the most effective way to support the school. We are particularly keen to recruit parents with some of the following experience, but as I have said, we can use whatever skills you have.
I really hope you will consider nominating yourself to join our Governing Body. They are an essential part of the effective running of our school. Remember, willingness is the most essential requirement!
Winter / Christmas Stories
I hope you are all enjoying the stories being recorded by staff and uploaded to our Youtube channel. You should have received a letter about the stories this week and I would urge you to check out the content with your child. Not only are their new stories being uploaded there is a lot of earlier content that your child can watch and enjoy. This week's stories are read by Miss Lennon and Miss Barrett.
Assembly
This week we learned about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which is celebrated in 2020 from the night of Thursday 10th December until Friday 18th December. In addition we looked at the similarities between different religious festivals and how we are all far more alike than different. This continued our theme of 'tolerance for all' and I am delighted to have had many conversations with pupils over the past months regarding this.
"All the darkness in the World cannot extinguish the light of a single candle." Here's hoping we can all be a light! Happy Hanukkah to all.
Please look out for next week's bulletin on Thursday 17th December, the last day of term for pupils.
Best wishes for the weekend.

Head Teacher

Dear Families
You may have heard the Government's announcement last night that schools can alter the last day of this term to a training day. After much thought and consideration of the impact of this on pupils, families and staff we have taken the decision to do this.
This means, pupils last day of term is Thursday 17th December, finishing at 3.05pm.
Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter.
Best wishes, Mrs Rigby

They are a new charity so do not yet have a website, but they do have a Facebook page - 'Give and Share....Formerly known as Operation Christmas Box', if you'd like to see their progress or find information about donation points in the local area.

The local Neighbourhood Watch and Online Watch Link (Owl) have sent out an email this week with a warning which we would like to pass on to families:
COVID19 Alert
Fraudsters impersonating NHS Staff
Dear Watch Member,
Scammers are contacting elderly people claiming that they can arrange COVID19 vaccines if a payment is made.
The scammers do not necessarily know whether the person they are calling is elderly - they simply call a large volume of numbers until they get a 'hit' on someone who engages in the conversation.
The NHS is the only organisation that has access to the vaccine, and they will never ask for payment.
The NHS is currently contacting eligible people by phone. If you are asked for payment it is therefore not a genuine call, so do not engage with the fraudsters in any way.
If you believe you have been a victim of fraud please report to 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk.

We know that many parents of children with disabilities struggle to manage their children's behaviours of concern, including aggression, violence, controlling and self-destructive behaviour.
The Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) Parenting Programme has helped thousands of families to change their lives. Parents report increased confidence in their parenting, a greater sense of agency and improved relationships within the family.
NVR has proved effective with neuro-atypical children/young people, including those who are non-verbal, and with all kinds of family make-up, including foster and adoptive families.
For parents/carers who want to find out more, we are holding a 2-hour online Introduction To NVR session. The aim is to help people decide if this approach could work for their family and to offer some tools for them to implement straightaway.
The session will be presented by myself and my colleague, Dawn Oliver. Both of us are parents of neuro-atypical children and we have both embedded NVR in our families.
Date: Saturday, 12th December
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm
Cost: £10 (£5 for those on a low income or receiving means-tested benefits)
Tickets are available from Eventbrite
Do check out our website - www.nvrpc.org.uk
We are a social enterprise set up to offer NVR training and support to parents and professionals, on a not-for-profit basis.
ONLINE INTRODUCTION TO NVR
(Non-Violent Resistance Parenting Approach)
Saturday, 12th December, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Are you struggling to manage your child’s aggressive, violent, controlling or self destructive behaviour? The NVR Parenting Approach can help you. The Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) Parenting Programme has helped thousands of families to change their lives. Parents report increased confidence in their parenting, a greater sense of agency and improved relationships within the family. NVR has been implemented in a wide range of family situations, including violence, drug/alcohol misuse, verbal abuse, self-harm, controlling behaviour and eating disorders. NVR can be used with children from around 5 years old, right up to adulthood. It also has proved effective with neuroatypical children/young people and with all kinds of family make-up, including foster and adoptive families. Want to find out more? Come along to our online Introduction to NVR session The session is aimed at parents and carers struggling to manage their children/young people’s behaviours of concern. If you are already practising NVR in your family, it is also an excellent way to introduce NVR to your supporters. This lively and interactive presentation by the NVR Practitioners Consortium will introduce the principles of NVR. The aim is to help you to decide if this approach could work for your family, find out how you can support a family practising NVR, and to offer some tools for you to implement straightaway. Tickets cost £10 (£5 if you are on a low income or receiving means-tested benefits) and are available from Eventbrite "NVR has helped us build a safer, more emotionally aware family, recognising what does and doesn’t matter. I don’t know what we’d look like without it, but I don’t think we’d be in a place where we have grown in our love for each other in the way we do now."
About the facilitators:
Dawn Oliver was trained in NVR by Michelle Shapiro in 2015. Dawn has theoretical knowledge and personal experience in the fields of autism, adoption and person-centred approaches. Dawn has delivered NVR training to parents of children with SEND in schools. She also facilitates NVR group trainings for adoptive parents, parents of children with SEND and foster carers, as well as working directly with families. Dawn also trains professionals. Dawn is a qualified NVR Practitioner and Supervisor.
Rachel Braverman discovered NVR just in time. Her adopted son has significant and complex needs, which nearly led to the placement breaking down. Adopting NVR principles has led to the violence reducing from daily/going on for hours to occasional and short lived episodes, transforming the atmosphere at home. In her professional life, Rachel was an experienced trainer and facilitator, so she was delighted to be able to train as an NVR practitioner in 2018. She works with groups and individual families.
