Dear Families
It was a pleasure to see so many of you at yesterday's Zoom meetings regarding our development proposals. If you were not able to attend we will be sending out further invitations where you will have two more opportunities to hear the proposal and see the presentation.
Please find the key points below:
- Over the next two and a half years Meadow will have two further development / expansion projects
- One project is the development of a second site based in Harefield currently being called 'Northwood Road'
- Pathway 1 pupils and staff are the identified group who will be relocated to this second site from September 2023
Will are sending letters to all families clarifying which Pathway your child is following and which site they will be located at from September 2023.
We will also be sending a questionnaire to families of Pathway 1 pupils around Easter to gather your thoughts, queries and concerns, so we can incorporate these into our planning and work with you to address any issues.
Now that many families have had the information. Next week we are speaking to pupils about the developments.
Cake sale
This week's cake sale that was organised by Marcel in Year 10 and supported by his form group and a 6th Form vocational group was so successful. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations and a HUGE thank you to Marcel and his team for being so thoughtful and community minded in supporting the charities working with Ukrainian refugees.
Twitter
If you don't already follow us on Twitter please consider doing so. Recent tweets have included a photo of the work going on under our MUGA (Multi Use Games Area), the cake sale, Year 14 pupils on their college placement brushing a pig and much, much more. It's a great way to see some regular updates of what is happening in our school community. https://twitter.com/MeadowHighSch
Very best wishes to you all.

PARENTS PLEASE BE AWARE
YUBO (YELLOW)
Concerning New App
Aimed at Under 18s
|
|
I just wanted to raise your awareness regarding a problematic app that has recently had some media attention. The app “YUBO” formally known as “Yellow” is being marketed as a dating app for under 18s referred to as “Tinder for Teens”. The name alone raises many alarm bells and some of the most worrying features of the app are that it heavily promotes live streaming as the primary chat method. This means they allow live chat groups to be set up with no filter on content or topics along with features very akin to apps like “Tinder” such as swiping left/right on profiles for people in your area.
There have been reports of sexual offences occuring after meetings were arranged through this app and The Times did an article about the appalling content young people can be exposed to using it, along with other media outlets such as The Sun and New York Post.
We are advising parents to closely monitor their childs social media use and we strongly encourage that this app is not used by any young people.

Skittles Group
We are pleased to reintroduce our new “skittles''club for members of the LGBT+ community and allies. This will be running on select afternoons by staff members. This is a non-curriculum club with no discussion around sexuality or RSE.
It is set up as a community club so that students feel they belong. Research shows that belonging to communities improves mental health and wellbeing. Members of the LGBT+ community as well as allies can attend and take part in activities such as making cookies, creating art work and working on inclusion projects.
Agenda and minutes will be added to the Pupil Voice section of the school website.
Staff members are invited to support either as a member of the LGBT+ community or an ally. If anyone requires any further information please contact Carol Mitchell or Michelle Taylor.
Thank-you
Miss Taylor

World Book Day 2022!
World Book Day is always celebrated for a whole week at Meadow High School! We used this as an opportunity to promote core literacy skills and build links with the world beyond school. This year is special as it was the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. World Book Day is now celebrated in over 100 countries around the world!
The theme we chose this year was a positive focus on looking forwards after the challenge of the last 2 years - ‘The Future – What’s Next? ’. We supported our students to gain an understanding of next step plans for our school but also explore their own plans for the future i.e. getting back to socializing and activities they have missed but also what they want to achieve in the future including steps they need to take to make this happen.
Our library was temporarily out of bounds due to Phase 2 of the build however, we were not deterred! We ran a range of activities throughout the week including staff sharing a favourite book with their class and a Reading Across the Curriculum challenge. This was at school and home and we asked you to help by encouraging your child to use their reading skills as much as possible. We sent home A Guide to Better Reading at Home for ideas on how to support this work and offered the opportunity for training if you’re finding it hard to get your teenager reading – you are certainly not alone if you do! Please fill in the slip on the letter or let your child’s Form Tutor know if you would like to take part. We are offering a Friday afternoon in-school session and an online session at 5:00pm on a Wednesday. We will confirm dates once we have all replies in and collated, so that these sessions can be as targeted and useful for those who attend.
Non-uniform/Dress-Up Day on World Book Day was so much fun! Students enjoyed coming to school dressed as either a character from a favourite story [book, film or television series] or a person from a non-fiction book including a job that interests them. Staff joined in too and I think you will agree we certainly did World Book Day proud!

Students arrived at school looking a bit different – mind you, so did Mrs. Rigby! We had lots of fun sharing photos of our amazing students in assembly this week!

FEARLESS WORKSHOP
On Monday 7th March 2022 we were very lucky to have Kenya Lamb from Crimestoppers come and deliver a workshop called ‘Fearless.’
Around thirty of our students took part and learnt more about real life issues that may affect them including drug awareness, youth violence, knife crime and county lines. They also found out more about how to report crime using an online form and who they can talk to anonymously if they are worried about anything.
The students really enjoyed the workshop and demonstrated how mature they are. There were lots of healthy discussions and contributions - well done everyone!

Thank You For All The Donations
Non-Uniform Day and Cake Sale - Ukraine
On Wednesday we held a non-uniform day to raise money for the refugees of Ukraine. It was great to see so many pupils and staff dressed in blue and yellow. Thank you so much for your support and kind donations.
Thank you so much to families for all the donations of items to support the refugees of Ukraine. Those items will all be quickly passed on to a charity who are working in Poland to support the refugees.
Another thank you to families for sending in an array of cakes and goodies for the cake sale on Wednesday. You have all been very busy baking and icing! Again, money raised will be given to a charity supporting the Ukrainian refugees. We had enough cakes to hold a second sale on Thursday (and plenty of enthusiastic customers!). We will let you know the total amount of money raised very soon.

Mothers' Day Sale
The students in the charity shop have worked hard on a special table dedicated to items for sale for Mother's Day (which is on Sunday 27 March this year). We have had some masses of donations for the shop and have picked out some lovely items that the students think are suitable for gifts for Mothers Day. These items range from face masks to candles and even handbags. Items are priced between 20p and £2 if your child would like to come and purchase anything. We are open every lunchtime and Wednesday & Thursday as part of our work experience for the 6th form students.
Also if you would like to donate anything to the shop please contact Miss Wilson at swilson@meadowhighschool.org to discuss if you have items suitable for our charity shop.
Thank you
Miss Wilson

RESEARCH INTO WELLBEING OF PARENT / CARERS
Dear parents/carers,
Dr. Siobhan O'Dwyer from Exeter University Medical School is currently leading national research on the wellbeing of parent carers, funded by NIHR (the research arm of the NHS). As part of the research they are inviting parent carers from across England to participate in a survey. Parents, step-parents, foster parents, kinship carers, and legal guardians are all welcome to participate, as long as you live in England and your child (or at least one of the children you care for) is under 18.
By sharing our experiences we can help researchers develop better support for carers in crisis. The survey has been co-designed by carers.
Many thanks,
Hillingdon PCF,
On behalf of the Steering Committee

Look Closer Campaign
#LookCloser is a partnership campaign between The Children’s Society, the National County Lines Co-ordination Centre and the British Transport Police aiming to raise awareness of child exploitation and abuse, with a particular focus on public spaces. The campaign also seeks to challenge stereotypes of victimhood, highlighting that child exploitation can happen anywhere, and any young person can be a victim.
Together we can protect children from this abuse - if something doesn't feel right, report it!
